Roger:
I personally don?t use MD because I want to have the option of synced stereo sound, what requires a 3rd sound track that MD not is designed for.
But concerning the start-stop funcionality, I can tell you, that I supplyed all my other hifi units with this:
A Sony CD-player, a CD-walkman and a Sony-tapedeck.
All I did was soldering 2 wires in parallel to the pause buttons of the keyboards of the appliances.
Connecting the 2 wires together starts a record or play funcionality. Conecting AGAIN the 2 wires together, during playing or recording, stops the process.
I use this to remote start for sound sources in post production.

sampling rates have nothing to do with sync. granted, you do have a higher quality options with DAT, but mini disk recorders sample at CD quaility. take a look at the marantz MD recorder. this ain't no toy. a great professional recorder for sync sound. and i might add, with the MD recorder you get "random access"....no more rewinding.....

Personally, I think that any arguments about the fidelity of minidisks, for recording dialog, are ridiculous.
Before digital recording of dialog came in, the amount of generations that dialog went through, before ending up on the final print, degraded the quaility to much below what any consumer level Minidisk recorded can handle.
They would record on analog (Nagra's, which sound terrific), then it would be bounced to mag stock, which is not great sounding,
and possibly re-recorded one or more times before the final print made.
Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, for intance, sometime. The dialog, and for that matter, a lot of the sound FX, are NOT high fidelity, by any means, but it's still an awesome film.
So I think it's overkill to try and insist on absolute top technology for dialog audio.
And I'm not a "digital = perfect" guy, either.
Now, as far as sync arguments go, that's another story!

*of course* it does. record at 48 khz and play back at 44.1 and you'll lose sync fast, right? or record at 0.1% over 44.1 and you have instant sync with telecined material, without need for resampling. can't do that with most minidisc players.

no, if you convert from one rate to another, you change the quality of the recording.
